Art from Greece
During the third event in the “Sound of Europe” series, German-Greek artist Alexander di Vasos addressed the political situation in Greece through the medium of painting.
He made the following comments on his work, ΕΛΛΑΔΑ:
“We all live beneath the same sky, but we do not all have the same horizon.
A bull seduces Europa. Twelve yellow stars.
Corruption reigns for years. Governments and citizens, blind and deaf, cover each other’s eyes. Those further above – one union – sit and watch. They know, but they too choose to close their eyes. One hand washes the other – and all hands wash that of the banker. Everyone grins and is happy.
A crisis. A country has the rug pulled out from under its feet. Numerous crises. Several crises. Immigration. A suitcase in each hand.
Greece back where it was in the 1960s.
Those who can, emigrate. Corruption continues to reign. Europe is blind. In Greece, refugees are mistreated. Lampedusa, Patra, Korinthos, Amygdaleza. More crises. Young people and families pursuing a dream.
Anger. Despair. Right-wing extremism. Racism. Everybody is at fault, nobody has anything to do with it. Political games. Complacency, forgetting the past.
How can you communicate or be direct at a live painting performance? That is why I use the medium of poetry. You can be specific using the words of great poets.
They described everything that was to come and said what there is to say.
The star is turning red. The time is ripe. We need to rethink things.
The difference between animals and humans.
You can only understand a different country’s public opinion, different way of life and different culture if you change your thinking. And that applies to everyone and everything.”
Alexander di Vasos has German-Greek roots and was born in Kinshasa in former Zaire. He studied graphic design, painting and sculpture in Athens. His colourful and humorous abstract works primarily address social and political issues with an anthropocentric focus.
