“United in diversity” The European Union’s official motto not only expresses the unity of the member states in their diversity – it also defines the core of European culture. Over the centuries, a diverse cultural landscape with multiple traditions and languages has developed from the same or similar roots. But this diverse landscape also has many common features. This why the EU sees itself not just as a purely economic community but also, and most importantly, as a cultural and political community based on shared values.
For example, the European common currency is not merely a type of money: It is also a powerful symbol of this value-based community. We should always remind ourselves of these facts, especially in difficult times. The European ideal involves more than just financial questions. Europe represents diversity and culture; friendship and solidarity; and sustainability and the future.
“The Sound of Europe”: The Federal Ministry of Finance’s new event series combines political and cultural dialogue with musical virtuosity. Our aim is to bring people together on a regular basis to affirm and enjoy our unity in diversity. We hope the series and this website will give you the opportunity to find out more about Germany’s eurozone partners, their rich musical heritage and their individual strengths in meeting our joint political challenges.
As the newest member of the eurozone at the time, Estonia kicked off the “Sound of Europe” event series in 2013 as the first guest country. Not only does Estonia have an unbelievably strong musical tradition, but it has also demonstrated, by joining the common currency in 2011, that it is possible for a country to excel economically and financially even when it is in the eye of the storm.
