The musicians of the YXUS Ensemble are renowned interpreters of contemporary music. The YXUS Ensemble, which has been together since 2013, evolved out of the famous NYYD Ensemble, which was founded in 1993. The NYYD Ensemble, which was named after the Estonian contemporary music festival of the same name, specialised in new music from the start.
The repertoire of both the NYYD Ensemble as well as YXUS contains a broad spectrum of contemporary music from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. For the ensemble, the most important criterion when selecting works is the artistic value of the music. The name YXUS comes from the Estonian word “üksus” (“unit”) and reflects the unity the group feels, having played together for 20 years.
The core of the ensemble consists of a string quintet, a wind quintet, piano and percussion, but the actual composition of the ensemble varies according to the work being performed.
